Book review – Lady of Devices by Shelley Adina

Lady of Devices (Book one of Magnificent Devices) by Shelley Adina Review by D.A Lascelles Steampunk is becoming a big thing these days. While it might not yet have achieved the lofty heights of the Vampire as a standby for writers to fall back on, it is certainly gaining a lot of credence as a popular genre for readers and writers to explore. Lady of Devices is an excellent example of the genre. Seeming to combine the best traits of YA fiction – a plucky young heroine in a complex love triangle – with the standard tropes of Steampunk fiction – clockwork and steam powered machines in a gritty Victorian setting. The story follows the exploits of Claire Trevelyan, a young lady of the aristocracy recently graduated from St Cecilia’s Academy for Young … Read entire article »

Book Review – The Mongoliad Book 1 By Paco G. Jaen

The Mongoliad Book 1 by multiple authors The Mongoliad Book 1 (via G*M*S Magazine) Epic sweep with lots of sword-fights, what’s not to like? By Megan Robertson Publisher’s blurb: “The first novel to be released in The Foreworld Saga, The Mongoliad: Book One, is an epic-within-an-epic, taking place in 13th century. In it, a small band of warriors and mystics raise their swords… … Read entire article »

Book Review – THE LAST WEREWOLF by Glen Duncan

Book Review – THE LAST WEREWOLF by Glen Duncan

THE LAST WEREWOLF by Glen Duncan Review by Ren Zelen While Vampires and Zombies have been jamming the highway to the bookshelves and multiplexes, Werewolves have largely been left to idle by the side of the literary road. With Glen Duncan’s protagonist, Jacob Marlowe, you get more than you bargain for: not just a man but a werewolf, not just a werewolf, but an existentially philosophical one. The novel is, ostensibly, a diary. The tale begins after a … Read entire article »

Novella Review – Flirt by Laurell K Hamilton

Novella Review – Flirt by Laurell K Hamilton

Flirt by Laurell K. Hamilton Review by Alexius White Ok, two crazy clients walk into Anita Blake’s office. Both clients want their late spouse to be brought back from the dead as zombies. Which client is crazier? This is the question that hangs in the air for the first half of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Flirt. Flirt is the 18th work in the Anita Blake series. It is not a novel or a graphic novel; rather, Flirt is … Read entire article »

Book Review – Blood Sins by Kay Hooper

Book Review – Blood Sins by Kay Hooper

Blood Sins by Kay Hooper Review by Alexius White   Religion Colts are by design weird. They start out nice and all about god, but they always, always end by drinking the Kool-Aid. The Church of the Everlasting Sin is no different except for having a powerful psychic as its leader.  Written by Kay Hooper, Blood Sins is the second novel in the Blood series; yet, it is the 11th novel in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. The … Read entire article »

Book review – Hexed by Kevin Hearne

Book review – Hexed by Kevin Hearne

Hexed by Kevin Hearne Review by Alexius White What happens when you kill a god? Easy, all the other gods want you to kill their enemies (or Thor). This is one of the things Atticus O’Sullivan finds out in Hexed, by Kevin Hearne. Hexed is the second novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles. The first novel in the chronicles is Hounded, and the third is Hammered. I have already read Hammered. I loved it and gave it … Read entire article »

Book Review – Dodge and Twist by Tony Lee

Book Review – Dodge and Twist by Tony Lee

Dodge and Twist by Tony Lee Review by D.A Lascelles Imagine if Charles Dickens had written Ocean’s 11 and set it in Victorian London instead of modern day Las Vegas. Got that image in your head? Good. Now imagine that as well as this concept he had decided to write it as a sequel to one of his already published works. Actually, don’t bother doing that at all because you actually don’t need to. Dodge and Twist is … Read entire article »

Book Review – The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison

Book Review – The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison Review by Alexius White One of the main things I liked about the novel is that it is actually an urban fantasy alternate history series. There is a complete sub history in the series dating back to the discovery of the DNA double-helix, which is known as the Turn. Ever since then Inderlanders (non-humans) live side-by-side with the humans. The second thing I like about the novel … Read entire article »

Anthology Review – Absolute Visions Edited by MacAllister Stone

Anthology Review – Absolute Visions Edited by MacAllister Stone

Absolute Visions Edited by MacAllister Stone Review by D.A Lascelles By rights I should hate this book and every writer in it. You see, one of my stories was up for inclusion in this anthology and missed out, by the merest gnat’s whisker, from being added to the final line up. However, on reading the stories that did make it I can understand the editors’ dilemma. They simply had far too many excellent stories to choose from … Read entire article »

Book Review – Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

Book Review – Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs Review by Alexius White How do you get someone who doesn’t read a lot of crime novels to want to read yours? Easy, put a dead body in a barrel; in the middle of a land fill next the Charlotte Motor Speedway during one of NASCAR major races. I am a southerner and a fan of NASCAR. I was hooked from the first page. I don’t read a lot of novels … Read entire article »
