Book Review – Waking Hours by Lis Wiehl, An East Salem Novel

Waking Hours (The East Salem Trilogy) by  Lies Wiehl and Pete Nelson

Review by Maria Snell

WOW!  What a phenomenal book!  I just finished this novel and I can.not.wait for the second book in the series!  Waking Hours by Lis Wiehl is a book written with intelligence that will grab you from the first page and will not let you go even when you read the last word!  It has everything that you could possibly want in a mystery/thriller:  a fantastic and credible plot, very well developed characters, a mix of reality and the supernatural, spooky moments that will have you looking over your shoulder, romance, fast paced action, twists and turns…

Dani and Tommy knew each other from high school (they had been the Homecoming King and Queen) but had not seen each other since then.  Tommy had a successful career as a professional football player until an accident on the field that left an opposing teammate dead made him retire, open a gym and study to become a PI.  Dani is now a psychiatrist that works for the DA in East Salem.   A gruesome murder of a high school girl brings them together to solve the mystery…and in other ways that they could not have foreseen.

Firmly planted in modern Westchester County, Waking Hours also takes us through a roller coaster of unexplained paranormal activity, the fight between good and evil and the reminder that the fight between Satan and God is still going on and not something relegated to Biblical stories.

Together the protagonists work to solve the murder but also to understand what is really going on in East Salem…they have recurring dreams, meet the same angel and other not-so desirable creatures.  Waking Hours has a dual front between the “down-to-earth” solve this gruesome but run-of-the-mill murder in a affluent town and unexplained supernatural forces.  These supernatural forces are introduced to the reader, they affect the plot but remain unexplained…the path is set for the second book in the series – a book I just can’t wait to get my hands on.
